The surveys

I carried out both qualitative and quantitative research with people of a similar age to me in each country. The aim was to find the most common sports in their school and establish whether basketball is popular. From this research I hoped to understand their attitudes towards the sport and whether those who are interested in basketball felt that there is enough investment in the sport in their country.  To gain a deeper insight into basketball habits in schools in Scotland and in France, I thought the best way to do this was to create a survey and send to contacts I have in both countries. I received a larger sample size in Scotland than in France because of the wider range of contacts in Scotland.

The survey was completed by a variety of people from different backgrounds.

France

I asked them what the most popular sports were in their school, with basketball coming out top in France.

Afterwards, they were asked if basketball was offered as an extracurricular sport

Two out of the three people who said no, said that they wouldn't like to see the sport offered. For those three, they were asked why they thought that basketball wasn't offered, their answered consisted of "D’autres sports sont prioritaires" (other sports are prioritised), "Je ne sais pas" (I don't know) and the last thought that it was a shame for those who wanted to have basketball offered at their school even though they personally didn't like the sport.

To gain knowledge on their playing habits, I asked how often their basketball sessions take place after school or during lunch

On one hand, Scotland had an average of around one to three sessions every week

While on the other hand, France didn't have very many sessions with an average of two, however, many of the students either chose to ignore these sessions or weren't sure

On this question, everyone was asked who coaches their sessions

After, they answered whether they actually play basketball as an extracurricular activity

It was quite surprising to me that nobody in the French school chose to play basketball as an extracurricular sport, due to France's recent success in basketball.

Continuing, the next question asked was if the school had a school team (only asked to those who said they played basketball outside of school)

Then, whether they played in a club outside of school

Finally, with the last question, they were asked if there needs to be more investment into sports to increase the quality of sessions

The most frequent answers were coaching and budgets at council level.
