My name is Elliott Schiltz and I’m a sixth year student at Broughton High School, Edinburgh. I have played basketball since the age of 12 and have played for my school team. I am also planning on studying modern languages at University so I combined my two passions for the subject of my Scottish Languages Baccalaureate project.

About the project

The aim of this project is to investigate and compare the opportunities that young people have to play basketball in France and in Scotland. My aim was to find out how common basketball is as an extracurricular activity in schools in both countries, the level of investment in supporting the growth of the sport and how these elements reflect on professional level basketball in each country.

What is the Baccalaureate?

The Scottish Languages Baccalaureate is a qualification that combines at least one Advanced Higher language course and another Higher language. The full Baccalaureate includes an interdisciplinary project carried out in your own study time. This can be a science-based project, history or, in my case, a languages project. I'm currently studying Advanced Higher French and Spanish.

What do I get out of the project?

From the Baccalaureate, I hoped to improve my computer and presentation skills as I have never built a website before. I thought it would be a useful skill for me to have in the future. I also hoped that through feedback on my work on the project, I will better understand my own skills development for the future. This project has also helped me improve my ability to work independently.
